Watching the mistakes others make seems to be a valuable way to learn poker -- it is far less costly then making the same mistake yourself. This time however I couldn't quite understand what was happening. Only two people saw the flop (using the names Nacho and Worship), and both of them were good, conservative players. I wasn't expecting much betting.
The real action happened at the turn, which was then showing:
Nacho bets $1.20 and Worship raises to $2.80 and gets a call.
Now recall this is a $0.05 BB table. $1.20 was a bit under pot, but still, a large bet. The raise was unexpected: given the board it was looking like at most two pair, or maybe trips. The 67 was unlikely given a raise pre-flop. So either there were trips, or both parties were drawing.
Then came the river:
Nacho bets $4.40 and Worship goes all-in to $6.55. Nacho calls and the pot is $19.40. Then Worship shows his cards and I don't know what to think. The raise on the turn may have made sense as he had 8 outs to a straight, but otherwise he had nothing. Any lousy pair would beat him. So why did he call?
For Nacho, well, he didn't believe anybody had the straight so he basically made a value bet. He was holding . Not a great hand, but still better than any board pair, which is what I assume he though Worship was holding.
